When there are five or six spaces or even half a page between lines, its almost impossible not to sometimes lose track of where paragraphs begin and end.  Since I started tutoring the ACT in 2008, Ive  spent who knows  how much time  explaining just where the sentence is supposed to be inserted, or which paragraph a  little numbered box is actually referring to. Sooner or later, almost every ACT student of mine has missed a question  simply because they couldnt figure what they were supposed to fix where. Beyond the most obvious instances of formatting-related mistakes, though, Ive noticed some subtler errors. One problem  that seems to come up again and again involvespage turns. When I work through the same tests with enough people, I  inevitably start to notice  that almost everyone gets certain questions wrong, usually for the same reasons. A couple of tests that I regularly use have questions that bridge two pages that is, the sentence that a question asks about begins at the bottom of one page and ends at the top of the next page. Sometimes, its a very long sentence, which means its easy to lose track of. And very often, my students answer those questions incorrectly because theyve only read the information on the page containing the underlined portion or numbered box.They either didnt want to make the effort  to back up a page and read from the beginning of the sentence (relatively rare) or, more frequently, were so focused on the underlined portion of the sentence that they didnt realize  it actually began on the previous page. Ironically, focusing on the question so hard caused them to overlook the larger  context and miss the very information that they needed to answer the question. Had the entire sentence been located on a single page, they would likely have read from the start of it; but because it was split up, they simply didnt notice that they werent reading from the beginning. The moral of the story? Always, always back up and read from the beginning of the sentence,  actively identifying where that place is. The capitalized letter at the beginning of a word is a giveaway, and no, Im not being sarcastic. Sometimes you have to be that literal. Recently, Ive started seeing the same problem with paragraphs and rhetoric questions, specifically adding/delete sentences questions. In order to determine whether information should be added or deleted that is, whether its relevant to a paragraph it is first necessary to know what that paragraph is  about. What part of the paragraph tells you most directly what its going to be about? Often,  the first (topic) sentence or couple of sentences. When the first sentence is on the previous page, however, its suddenly a lot less intuitive to read that  spot. And when lines are separated by multiple spaces, making only a few lines of text appear much longer, it is possible to not even  realize that a paragraph begins on the previous page. Again, the best way to guard against this  problem is to back up and consciously search for the indented line that always signal the beginning of a paragraph, keeping in mind that it may be on the previous page. Working this way might seem like an inordinate amount of effort one more  little detail to think about, on top of everything else but it can actually save you time and energy in the long run. Amillennialism Amillenianism literally means no millennium. This name stems from the disbelief that there will be a literal thousand year period called the golden age, either before or after the return of Christ (Gregg 459). This view unlike the others, is not a new concept, even though the name is new. In fact, R.B. Strimple claims this particular view has been around as long as Christianity (83). Amillennialists generally assume that all millennium prophecies are fulfilled in between the first and the second coming of Christ (Gregg 459). Everyday Use Essay In Everyday Use, Alice Walker navigates the cultural gap between a mother and her two daughters. It is a story which depicts life from two perspectives, but seen through one set of eyes. One daughter stems life from tragedy, seeing the world for what it is, and welcomes each of lifes challenges with cautious acceptance; meanwhile, the oldest daughter abhors anything standing in the way of what she feels she is expected. The mother has to maintain a position in the middle of the two, although, Maggie is clearly more dependent than her sister is toward their mother. Maggie, the younger of the two sisters, was badly burned when the house they used to live in caught fire. The mother describes that horrible evening: Sometimes I can still hear the flames and feel Maggies arms sticking to me, her hair smoking and her dress falling off her in little black papery flakes. Maggie was literally scarred for life both physically and emotionally. She would never be the same again; she will always be ashamed of her scars. She takes life day by day, and she stays under her mothers protective wing. She enjoys a rugged farming life in the country and after her first house burned down moved to a small, tin-roofed house surrounded by a clay yard in the middle of a cow pasture. She has two daughter Maggie who is much like herself living at home and uneducated, and Dee who was destined to go out into the world to see change and to be changed. Although Mrs. Johnson had two daughters, she places Dee her oldest daughter on a pedestal. She dreams about being reunited with Dee on a television talk show. During this time she would be ushered by a limousine and brought into a room where Johnny Carson shakes her hand and tells her what a fine girl she has (678). Dee has always been scornful of her family s way of life. She hated the first house they lived in and was happy to see it burn down. Dee s contentment was so focused on the burning of her house that she was completely oblivious to the fact that her sister had been burned and scarred for life. The selfish way Dee has behaved her whole life makes her visit home very ironic. She arrives home with a male companion, which leads the reader to believe they may be married. You advance to this conclusion because Dee has wrote her mother in the past telling her No matter where we choose to live, she, meaning Dee, will manage to come see us. But she will never bring her friends (679). When Dee and Hakim-a-barber get out of the car she is strangely delighted by her old way of life. After complaining for years about her families way of living she ironically jumps out of the car and takes photographs as if she missed the farm and appreciated every bit of it. To her mother s surprise, Dee claims she had changed her name to Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo. Mrs. Johnson is very disappointed because she had named her daughter after her sister. When asked why making such a big decision Dee states I couldn t bear it any longer, being named after people who oppress me (680). During Dee s visit she started to show the true meaning of her visit home. While examining different artifacts in the house Dee asks her mother if she could have the old butter churn so she could use it as a centerpiece for her table. This is completely ridiculous on Dee s part. She only wants the item to impress her peers. They have no sentimental value and she would probably not even know how to use it. After confiscating an item that Mrs. Johnson and Maggie still use, Dee had the audacity to take two quilts out of a trunk and expect to take them with no questions asked. When Mrs. Johnson told Dee that she had promised them to Maggie Dee being the self centered person she is says, Maggie can t appreciate these quilts (682)! She d probably be backward enough to put then to everyday use (682)! This really bothers me because Dee was offered the quilts before she had left for college but they were not fashionable to her so she refused them. Pretentious Mothers in Williams’ The Glass Menagerie and Amy Tans’ Two In the play The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams and the short story â€Å"Two Kinds† by Amy Tan, a theme of embattled control is established through the association with their children. William’s long-winded Amanda is an overpowering, delusional Southern belle mother. Dead set on finding her slightly handicapped daughter Laura a suitable husband, and dictating how her creative, yet bored, son Tom should conduct himself in life. Amanda, through her nagging and domineering instructions over everything each of her children do, from how they eat, to how they should live out their lives, pushes them into mental seclusion. The subsequent overbearing behavior by Amanda in due course drives Tom away leaving Laura in complete solitude with her mother. In a likewise manner, Tan depicts her character Suyuan as a very ambitious overconfident Chinese mother with visions of grandeur for her daughter Jing-Mei. Suyuan after being influenced by a television show decides th at Jing-Mei is to become a child prodigy. Through strict educational instructions, she drives Jing-Mei to a point of contentious revolt. The consequences of Suyuan’s authoritarian treatment to make Jing-Mei a star result in an outburst, after a talent show, causing a deep rift of silence between the two that lasts for twenty years. The parental domineering nature of Amanda in The Glass Menagerie and Suyuan in â€Å"Two Kinds† ultimately fail to force any lasting influential direction on their children, compelling them to follow entirely contradictory paths than the ones preferred by their mothers, forcing their children into rebellion. Nonetheless both mothers wield strong authority over their children, and the motives behind their dictatorial control are directly rela... ...ious physical and mental control over her daughter to become a child prodigy results in a belligerent resistance by Jing-mei. Buddhism and Jainism are the two branches of the Shramana tradition that still exist today. Jainism is largely confined to India, whereas Buddhism has only flourished abroad. Liberation, therefore, may be achieved by anybody irrespective of caste, creed, color or culture (in contrast to certain historical caste-based traditions) providing the necessary effort is made. Jain philosophy Jainism derives its philosophy from the teachings and lives of the twenty-four Tirthankaras (ford-makers or enligtened teachers), of whom Mahavira was the last.Jain Acaryas – Umasvati (Umasvami), Kundakunda, Haribhadra, Yasovijaya Ga?i and others further developed and reorganized Jain philosophy in its present form.
